Several months ago, I set a rule for myself that I would cap the number of people I follow on Tumblr at 126 people. It’s a somewhat arbitrary number based on an even row of avatars shown in the sidebar of my site at that time. Since then, every time I add a new follow, I make myself remove someone else. It gets harder and harder with each add, but I like the forced editing. Many more people would be too much for me to keep up with for now.
The result is 126 interesting, funny, insightful, creative, and all around awesome Tumblrs. If you’re looking for new people to follow, see the sidebar of JoeLaz.com.
As intriguing as this sounds, I don’t like the idea of aesthetic pruning. Not that I do not need to prune. I currently am following 290 people and while this supplies a constant stream on interesting content, it can get out of hand sometimes. When a bathroom break comes with 50 new posts, it’s time to reevaluate.
But I can’t bring myself to cut someone out as a matter of convienience to myself. If they have good content, content i enjoy, then they deserve my follow. So either I need to lose my integrity or really redefine my tastes.
Updates to follow (no pun intended).
interesting the criterias that each one uses to control the dashboard. i follow everyone that follows me and i think i must keep the limit on 3 times the number of followers. may end up getting out of control. there should be more filtering options for the dashboard.
