I could not take Rocinante (Asus Eee PC) to my trip with just its current amount of SSD (4GB which is fine if additonal machines are around) and some extra memory cards. An external USB HD would be essential to take the load of pictures and small clips a trip usually requires.
The whole saturday I struggled with Rocinante and a WD Passport USB HD. Got to a point that I thought I would be defeated and let it go.
At the surrender point I performed a search on the subject. Got the usual gazillions links but fortunately I clicked a link to forum where a user post something like that:
“It is weird why my external USB HD works fine on both USB connectors on the right panel but does not work at all when connected to the left panel USB connector.”
How have I managed to spend my whole saturday reading about file systems, disk formats, Linux and Windows disks issues and did not have the brilliant idea to check the two other USB ports on the right panel?
Deserved to loose the saturday.
No, no, no. It’s not what you’re thinking. I am a married man and love my wife. And by the way my wife is outrageously gorgeous and intelligent (not just my opinion but of every guy that I have to put a bad eye on everyday around the city). And think Julia is happy with her love life too.
Anyways, I must be fair, Julia is the only reason I am blogging at Tumblr today. My addiction to reading tech blogs is pathetic. Think I read them much more than their writers and editors.
Once, browsing TechCruch I found a post covering a party somewhere in Silicon Valley and mentioning Julia and a friend. Clicking a link here, another there, passing thru Valleywag and ends up I get to juliaallison.com. Tabbed browsing is a marvelous of this century and my mind set allows me to branch travel 7, 8, 9 windows with 20 tabs on each. From there I got to Tumblr.
No question Julia advertised Tumblr to me. And at Tumblr I found a very convenient alternative for all those accounts I have in Orkut, Facebook, Myspace, LinkedIn and so on that I could not stand for more than a week.
Tumblr better emulates my real social universe. I have lots of friends but do not necessarily need friendship bonds to observe people. Let’s call it platonic vouyeristic behavior. How many of you constantly meet that friendly stranger that you never talked with, but you see daily at a cafeteria, weekly at a bus stop, a book shop and they kinda end up belonging to your little social universe? How many times you talked to yourself about this friendly strange that he/she should have tried a better shirt color that day because that one he/she is using simply sucks?
That is much of it that I think Tumblr offers, you simply follow people who in a sort of way caught your attention or interest for whatever reason or even for no reason at all. No need to be friend or get a friend visa to browse his/her ideas, pictures, wise quotes or insane bullshit.
The spectrum of Tumblr’s people I follow goes from Julia to Desaturated. She is all over the place, posts a lot, dogs, friends, parties, break-ups, dates and whatsoever. I know a lot of people in my social universe like that. I live with them daily basis at work, family, parties, wherever.
Desaturated is a lesson of conciseness, focus, graphical clearness. Posts about a broad range of subjects but in a sort of way they are all a very clear sample of his perception. I know a lot of people like that too.
For one, word saves, for other, word condemns. For me both are right, both have their point.
Would I login everyday just to follow Julia? Not! Would I login everyday just to follow Desaturated? Not! For the spectrum I have been following from Julia to Desaturated? Yes! And I have been doing this. It is good, enterteining, instructive, motivating, brings a lot of ideas and insights to me.
Hope that what I am witnessing right now as reaction to Julia’s blog will not deter her to keep her blogging patern. I would not like to login just to check one end of the spectrum, what Desaturated might have came up with and do not have the chance to go through Julia’s posts and other people’s posts.
Also, I cannot condemn blogs created to beat Julia’s way because they are also part of the spectrum of a free and dinamic community.
Diversity should be the mantra here. This post is not in Julia’s defense (lots of people already wrote she does not need that), who I know zero about and I respect, it is not a futile mention of Desaturated. This post is in favor of neutrality, a word so much used by the internet community that should be applied here too, as much as possible.
In case people addressed here dislike what I wrote please let me know (I follow your blogs) and I will delete the post.
Julia’s picture was used without her previous knowledge so it is subject to be taken out.
Traveling is something very special. If I had the necessary resources I would be on the road forever. I am no Jack Kerouac, of course. There is a post here on how I envy talented people. Kerouac is much beyond talented.
I am about to go on vacations and plans are up to now (hope a last minute very important project does not show up and send me to other destination) to go for a ride thru Portugal and Spain, countries very related to me and my ancestors that unfortunately I have never been before.
Now is my turn to play a bit of John Steinbeck, also beyond talented author of Travels with Charlie, who took a ride thru US driving his Rocinante truck and with his dog Charlie as companion. That along with Kerouac`s On The Road and Allman Brothers Band`s Eat a Peach Album (best road music ever) are the most comprehensive ROAD KIT someone can ever need.
My Rocinante will be an Asus EeePC that company sent to me in order to keep me internet leashed during my vacations. Last time I had vacations I refused to take a notebook along. Nothing annoys more than an anchor on your back pack as when the idea is to ride freely and uncompromised. iPod Touch I guess would be fine for me (I am playing with one for weeks) but unfortunately to keep up with a big amount of typing is simply out of question. The little wonder will be more useful when I am required to type less.
EeePC is impressing me. Looks like a toy. Has a setup of toy. Weights like a feather not an anchor. But the little thing turns into a useful tool if properly used. It is also gaining the status of little wonder too. Keyboard although at first sight gives an impression of not being adequate, is a pleasant surprise. As a whole, nothing to complain about and think that with this on the road I will start use Tumblr appropriately, as tumblelogs.
Guess my Rocinante will not let me down while I enjoy the beauties of Don Quixote`s domains.
Hardest thing for someone who spent life away from the good habits of reading and writing (in short, not literate) is to have a blank screen in front and to have to fill it with words.
No doubt that to listen and to talk can be of great help for one’s mind improvement. But mostly if doing so with wise people that add knowledge and wisdom to the pack.
Happens that my IQ hardly matches, if much, some primitive mammals and spend my life surrounded 50% with very wise people and 50% idiots kinda zeroed the experience and left me in the limbo (somewhere between nothingness and inexistent).
Blogging became a challenge for me. I had been reading a lot of good stuff but also a lot of crap in a proportion of 20% to 80% that scares me.
Writing is a huge mountain that I have been trying to go up and see if at the top I will free my narrow minded being. Maybe a 360 degrees view at the top would lighten up my shadowed brain.
2008 is the year I will put 100 words together and get from an unknown person a comentary that the text have been understood as so.
